Review: SteelSeries Xai Laser Mouse | Posted on: 25/06/2010 @ 17:24
"The Xai is a tool, not a gadget." There's a lot more of this overblown hyperbole in the box for this terribly expensive mouse. It promises groundbreaking technical specifications and more. There's even a little LCD screen on the back to aid programming, which impressed us no end with its digitalism. Using your existing power cables as a network is a great idea, even if it has taken ages to get catch-on with the great unwashed, who appear to think that wireless is sexier. Well, for the home at least, it certainly isn't. Early versions ran at 14Mb/s and then 85Mb/s, but full fat 200Mb/s have been around for a while. Docs isn't the online Office suite. It's more of an experiment, combining Microsoft's tools with Facebook's social media empire, and one that needs serious work. Its editing tools pale before Google Docs, and it's a buggy tool to play with. Docs is happy to forget your edits and break down entirely, and its simplicity doesn't so much streamline its lack of features as draw attention to them. ...

Review: Audio Analogue Rossini VT2.0 | Posted on: 14/06/2010 @ 16:00
Version 2 of a product can signify something as trivial as a new front panel layout, but this CD player looks distinctly different internally, from the original Rossini. It's unusual in that it incorporates a valve; a 6922 twin triode (one section per channel) in the audio output stage, which is likely to give it some degree of distinctive character. In fact, Audio Analogue acknowledges, with ...

Review: Firestone Audio Korora | Posted on: 14/06/2010 @ 16:00
FIRESTONE’S RANGE of tiny boxes covers most audio functions and though this is the only phono model, it seems to have plenty of options that make it quite the all-rounder. Review: MacBook Pro | Posted on: 10/06/2010 @ 18:00
The spring of 2010 saw Apple's entire MacBook Pro range updated, though this 13-inch model didn't get as extensive an upgrade as the 15- and 17-inch versions. Unlike its stable mates, it didn't make the switch to Intel's new Core i-series chips, and so doesn't benefit from their new technologies such as Turbo Boost, Hyper Threading and an integrated memory controller. As it relies solely on ...

The idea of keeping a proper diary has tremendous appeal; those of us who blog, know the joy of wandering through old posts, wallowing in the nostalgia of past highs and lows, and learning from our mistakes. It all takes effort, though. Momento is a brilliant little idea, allying the idea of a traditional journal with modern notions of metadata and social networks, and wrapping it all up in a ...

The manufacturer does attempt to liven things up a little with a contrasting grey strip running along the bottom of the set, but the overall effect is passable rather than outstandingly pretty. However, what this set has that every one of its rivals lacks is ...
Review: Sony Bravia KDL-40HX703 | Posted on: 07/06/2010 @ 14:48
The Bravia KDL-40HX703 boasts Sony's new Monolithic design, with the screen sporting a fetching single-layer, black-edged fascia, and the facility to tilt backwards. It uses a so-called Deep Black Panel, too, in a bid to further create the impression that it is some kind of smaller brother of 2001: A Space Odyssey's mysterious black monolith. Connections are excellent. Four HDMIs get the ball ...
Review: Toshiba 40LV713DB | Posted on: 07/06/2010 @ 14:48
Toshiba's 40LV713DB is one of the cheapest 40-inch LCD TVs around. So we guess we'd better brace ourselves for a few compromises. These start, to some extent, with the set's looks. The chunky, rather plasticky bodywork looks a little old fashioned. The set's connections, aren't quite as extensive as we might have liked, either. There are three, rather than four HDMIs and no Ethernet port. As well ...

Wayland Meets Some Summer Love w/ New Changes | Posted on: 07/06/2010 @ 9:12
Last week we openly asked the question if and when will X12 emerge to replace X11, which was met by a variety of responses. Some view the Wayland Display Server as being a potential successor to the current X11 / X.Org Server, but others don't give it much credit seeing as it's not too actively worked on -- well, directly, but it leverages a lot of work actively going on with the Mesa and kernel ...

Linux 2.6.35-rc2 Kernel Released | Posted on: 06/06/2010 @ 18:24

Review: Samsung UE26C4000PW | Posted on: 05/06/2010 @ 20:00
The Samsung UE26C4000PW LED-backlit LCD TV is by far the most attractive we have seen close to this price. Merely millimetres thick and finished in a seductively rose-tinged gloss black, the UE26C4000PW looks to combine high-end aesthetic swagger with mass-market affordability. The svelte profile dictates that certain sacrifices have had to be made in the socket department, but a brace of HDMIs ...

Review: Samsung BD-C6500 Blu-ray player | Posted on: 05/06/2010 @ 16:48
Now that entirely entry level Blu-ray players can be bought for less than £100, manufacturers asking for more are having to work harder for their money. The BD-C6500 scores by engineering in some nifty features to justify a heftier price tag. Claimed to be 'the world's fastest Blu-ray player' when it was launched earlier this year, the stylish deck supports BD-Live (Profile 2.0). Samsung's ...
Review: Toshiba 26AV615D | Posted on: 05/06/2010 @ 16:48
The Toshiba 26AV615D is one of the cheapest sets around and has the looks to match. While it's not exactly ugly (in fact it's probably prettier than the unapologetically brutal Panasonic TX-L26X10B), the design seems a bit dated. That relatively bulky chassis carries a respectable three HDMI inputs as well as most of the usual analogue selection, although there is no digital audio output, which ...

Review: Grundig GU22DVDBLK | Posted on: 04/06/2010 @ 16:13
The Grundig GU22DVDBLK 22-inch HD Ready LCD TV is a decidedly no-frills affair, with a somewhat dated design and flimsy looking speaker grille making its budget status all too obvious. Inevitably, the glossy black bezel was covered in fingerprints within minutes of being unpacked. The unconventional 16:10 screen ratio makes the panel a tad squashed looking, and gives off the definite whiff of a ...

Review: Sony KDL-32NX503 | Posted on: 04/06/2010 @ 16:01
We wouldn't say Sony has entirely lost its way in design terms, but it hasn't been setting the aesthetic pace quite as it used to. The KDL-32NX503 LCD TV marks a deliberate attempt to change that, courtesy of a new 'Monolithic' design that's gone down well at recent technology shows. But how does the design hold up in the living room? And does the 'Network' TV marketing badge actually mean ...

Grace Digital Allegro WiFi Internet Radio Review | Posted on: 04/06/2010 @ 7:00
The Allegro is a dedicated internet radio designed with simplicity and portability in mind - and a clean, modern look along with support for Sirius, Pandora and thousands of other free radio stations. With a relatively modest price of around $170 online, my initial reaction was "Sounds great - where do I sign up!?!?" But let's temper our excitement and take a close look before passing judgment.

Review: Triax TR 105 | Posted on: 03/06/2010 @ 19:25
Though reasonably priced, the Triax TR 105 Freeview SD receiver isn't the smallest or smartest looking zapper around. The remote has less of a budget feel about it and it's well-placed and responsive buttons quickly become intuitive to use. The rear panel has a modulated UHF TV output but ...
