At the recent Pepcom show I met with the Kingston people who were kind enough to provide us with a review sample of their new USB 3.0 flash drive - the DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0. This is their first USB 3.0 flash drive and its fast as well as chunky. According to David Leong the reason for this girth is due to the drive housing two separate controllers - one for the USB 2.0 interface and the other for the USB 3.0. The DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 has read speeds of 80MB/sec and 60MB/sec for writes when using USB 3.0 and 30MB/sec for both read and write operating on a USB 2.0 connection. In case you were wondering; yes it is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 connectors. Depending on the power output of the USB 2.0 connection, you may need to use the included Y-split cable for powering the DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0. In the past we have seen great results with Kingston flash drives and expect to see more of the same with the DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0. Let's take a closer look at this new flash drive.
